If you are using a software package that emulates a dumb terminal, after dialing one of the numbers above, you must first put in your username and password, after that you will be at the terminal server prompt. From the terminal server prompt you can telnet directly to any internet address in the world.

When you are finished with your telnet session, logout as you would normally, and at the terminal server prompt type "QUIT". It is important that you type "QUIT" to drop your connection, simply logging out of your session will not drop your connection but return you to the terminal server prompt.

If you wish to use SLIP to have your machine be a remote internet node, you must again log in using your username and password, at the terminal server prompt you must type the command: SLIP. At that point your are ready to have your software perform a bootp. One of the most difficult things about using SLIP is to develop an dialing script that automatically does all this for you and give your modem the proper setup string .

These modems are especially busy during the academic year so please remember to logout when you no longer need your connection. To enforce this a timeout has been set on the modems so that any user who is idle for more than 10 minutes at a terminal server prompt, will be dropped. Also, a session timeout of 12 hours has also been implemented to help prevent a hung session from  tying up a modem for days.

If you experience any problems with connecting to these modem groups, including needing assistance with setting up your software or modem, please call UNET   at 561-3587. Portland users can call UNET in Portland at 780-4235.
