Technology Services

UNET Technology Services provides computing, networking and course delivery services for the entire University of Maine System. We have offices at the University of Maine in Orono, the University of Maine at Augusta, and the University of Southern Maine. Technology Services activities and personnel can be classified into the following groups:

  • Publications
  • General User Support
  • Administrative Systems
  • Networking
  • UNET Modem Pools
  • Operations
  • Maine School and Library Network
  • Accounts

UMS students, faculty and staff can obtain UNET accounts on request. These accounts can be used to connect to the Internet via modem from home, for e-mail, and for logon access to our IBM mainframe. For more information on the kinds of accounts and how to use them, see the helpdesk Web pages.

Account-holders who use the UNET modem pools to connect to the Internet can obtain modem use reports online. Each account is allocated a certain amount of time on the UNET modem pools each month. View the use report to determine the current and past months' usage.

    Hardware

For administrative applications, research, instructional and communications applications we run an IBM 9672 mainframe at the UM site. In addition we manage several UNIX machines for research, instruction and specialized administrative and networking functions.

Technology Services maintains a high-speed TCP/IP network linking the U. Maine System campuses, several other educational institutions in the state, the State government offices and numerous outreach sites including libraries and public schools. We are members of NEARNET, the New England regional Internet organization.
