Questions about CMS Accounts/Troubleshooting

I have been warned that my CMS password is about to expire. What do I do?
Please see the instructions for changing CMS passwords.

I have an account but I cannot logon to the mainframe
If you have a mainframe (CMS) account your password may have expired. When that happens, you cannot logon, you cannot receive new e-mail, and you cannot use the UNET modem pools. But all your files are still saved. Please contact Prudence Kennedy at 581-3552, prudence@maine.edu to get the password reset.

Your CMS password will expire every 150 days. You can change it by logging on to the mainframe and using the PASSWORD command or selecting "change password" from the "Personal Utilities" menu. See the previous item for more information.

If your account is a POP or Remote Access account, you cannot use the UNET mainframes in any case.

I have an account but when I try to dial up to the Internet, it tells me "access denied."
If your password expires, you cannot dial up using the UNET modems, because you have to have a valid id and password to use the modems. See above for information on passwords. Note that POP and Remote Access passwords don't expire, so this should only be a problem for mainframe accounts.

If you are a student, you must appear in the database of registered students to keep your account (whether it is a CMS or POP account). If you think your account may have been dropped because you haven't registered for any courses, please contact Prudence Kennedy, 581-3552, to check the status of your id.

Faculty and staff should renew their accounts at the end of each fiscal year. You should receive a renewal form in the mail.

I can logon to the mainframe, but the menu doesn't show up and I can't do anything
If you don't properly logoff from the mainframe, the next time you try to logon, you may find yourself in a special part of the operating system called CP. Look in the lower right corner of your screen and see if the message is "CP Read." Also your screen may say "Reconnected" in the main part of the display.

You have two choices: start fresh or continue what you were doing before. If you accidentally disconnected (for example, you accidentally hit the "off" switch on your computer), you can return to the work you were doing before by typing the command:

        BEGIN

To instead "wipe the slate clean" and start fresh, type the command:
        IPL CMS

This will act like a new logon from scratch.

When I try to logon to the mainframe, it tells me I'm already logged on!
Evidently you disconnected (without logging off properly) and you were using the network. The mainframe has not "realized" that you are gone! Press the return or ENTER key to clear away the screen with the big UMS logo. Then type the command:
      LOGON userid HERE

and press ENTER, where "userid" is your UNET id. Enter your password when requested.

I have forgotten my password or typed it in badly. Now the mainframe won't even let me TRY to logon!
That's right - you get three tries! Then you have to wait for about an hour before you can try again. This is to prevent hackers from trying to break into peoples' accounts.

If you have forgotten your password, you can have it reset by contacting Prudence Kennedy at 581-3552.

Some of my Shell Menu items have vanished! How do I get them back?
It is easy to delete Shell menu items, unfortunately. If you look at the Shell menus:
shell menu
notice that F4 deletes a menu item. People sometimes press F4 when they intend to press F3, and this will delete whatever menu item their cursor is on!

All alterations to a person's Shell environment are stored in a special disk file called "SHELL DATA" on that person's mainframe disk. To undo any alterations and return to the standard Shell set up, simply erase that SHELL DATA file from your filelist of personal files. For more information on how to erase a file, see the manual Using CMS.
