Connecting to the Internet Using Macintosh OS X and the UNET Modem Pools

This information is for Macintosh users who have Macintosh Operating System version OS X.

To use the UNET modem pools you will need an active UNET account. If you think your account is not active or are not sure what the password is, contact your Campus or Center computing support personnel, or call UNET User Services at (207) 561-3587 (an Orono number).

Each UNET account can use the modems for 50 hours of dialup time per month without a charge. If you need more than 50 hours, you can pay for additional time at the rate of 30 cents per hour. For more information on UNET accounts, please see the UNET accounts page.

To use a modem with your Mac and UNET, you need to configure your Network System Preference panel. Go to your Apple menu (far left of the menu bar at the top of your screen), pull down the Apple menu and select "System Preferences" in that menu. In the resulting window, click on "Network." If you don't see the "Network" item, click on the "Show All" icon to display all the System Preference items.

You will see something like this (different versions of OS X may vary slightly):

Network Preference Pane

If "Internal Modem" is not selected in the "Show" field, pull down that menu and select your modem. Click the TCP/IP tab and make sure that the Configure field has "Using PPP" selected as shown above. You do not have to fill in the "DNS Servers" and "Search Domains" fields.

Next click the "PPP" tab. You will see:

PPP settings

There are three fields you must fill in: Account Name, Password and Telephone Number. Type your UNET account user name in the Account Name field. Type your password in the Password field and the phone number of the UNET modem pool you want to use in the Telephone Number field. Please refer to the list of phone numbers below. Pick whichever phone number is a local phone call for you (you DON'T want to make a long distance call to connect to the Internet.) The Service Provider field is optional.

When you have filled in your account name, password and the modem pool phone number, you can click the "PPP Options" button for more settings if you wish. You will see:

PPP Options window

The "Session Options" choices are self-explanatory. We suggest leaving the "Advanced Options" settings as shown above. Click the "OK" button to save your changes and return to the Network window.

In the Network Preferences window, click the "Apply Now" button to save your settings. You can use the File menu to quit System Prefrences.

Connecting

Now you can connect. You have a tool called "Internet Connect" in your Applications folder (use the "Go" menu to open that folder window). Double-click Internet Connect and you should see something like this:

Internet Connect window

Click the "Connect" button. Once the connection to the Internet is successful, you can run any Internet program such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, e-mail programs, First Class, etc. To disconnect (hang up the phone), open Internet Connect and click the "Disconnect" button.

If you need to change the username, password or phone number for your connection, use the "Edit" button in Internet Connect to make the alterations.
